Is There a Train to Banff?
No — there is no passenger rail between Calgary and Banff. What the Rocky Mountaineer actually is, and what to take instead.
No. There is no scheduled passenger train between Calgary and Banff, and there has not been for a long time. This is the single most common wrong assumption people make when planning a Rockies trip, usually because Banff looks like the kind of place a train would serve — and because it once did.
What Does Exist, and Why It Is Not This
Rocky Mountaineer runs Vancouver to Banff over two days, April to October. It is a luxury sightseeing experience with glass-domed coaches and an overnight hotel stay, priced accordingly. It is not a way to get from Calgary to Banff — it does not start in Calgary, and it is not transport in the sense you mean.
VIA Rail, the national operator, serves Edmonton to Jasper — a genuinely useful train, but the wrong mountain town and the wrong starting city.
For June and July 2026 only, a Banff–Jasper route is running. Again: not Calgary.
So What Do People Actually Do?
Three options, and that is the whole list:
| Option | From | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shared shuttle | $43 | Scheduled, door-to-door, no driving |
| Private transfer | $98 | Your own vehicle and timing |
| Rental car | Varies | Freedom, plus winter driving and Banff parking |
The drive is about 90 minutes on Highway 1 in good conditions; the shared shuttles take closer to two hours, because they make stops.
Why This Matters More Than It Sounds
Because people plan around a train that does not exist, then arrive at Calgary International without a booking, in a queue, at the end of a long flight. The shuttles are the normal answer and they sell out in summer and over the ski season — so the practical advice is to book the ground leg when you book the flight.
The cost breakdown covers what each option actually runs to.
